Bring Back the Coffee Shop

So i was driving home and noticed a new coffee shop, Brewers. I stopped in and bought myself a mocha for old time sake. I sat down and with my baby on my lap, remembered back to the 90's and the golden age of the local coffee shop. This new shop was cute, but a little too "trendy" looking, but it is a step back into the coffee lifestyle.

I though back to my old hangs...The Coffee Emporium, Jungle Cafe`, The Whistle Stop Coffee Joint, and the kick ass coffee place on WMU's campus that was eventually turned into a hair salon. These were the epic images of Coffee Shop life...poetry readings, music, art, community journals, eclectic people and stimulating conversation, and of course great coffee and food bites. Your opinion of the show aside, but the Central Perk, where the FRIENDS always hung out, this is what I miss. A quiet place to relax, chat and hang with friends...cushie couches were a plus.

Starbuck may have the coffee industry in a stranglehold, but that is the sell-outs coffee shop. Te closest most people nowadays can get to the 90's coffee way of life is at a Barnes and Nobel bookstore...still not quite the atmosphere i was looking for.

So fine a locally own coffee shop and become a regular. Ask them if they'd stage poetry readings or accustic music. Start your own communal journal or bring in your old monopoly or chess set and leave it there for others to play. In this fast paced, rat race world we live in...don't we all need a couple hours of coffee shop time?
