There are very few places in Highlands County to take your family to. I have found a rare gem in Henscratch Farms. It is a u-pick farm between Sebring and Lake Placid. It is mainly a vineyard/winery, but they also grown the worlds best hydroponic strawberries, best I have ever tasted, blueberries, grapes (duh), and sunflowers (all u-pick). Thy also sell farm fresh eggs whih they have gotten my hooked on. Unfortunatly, some days the hens don't lay more than 8 eggs. Plus they arae free ranging hens...all natural.
My daughter loves going there to feed the chickens while I shop at the country store for jam, garlic grape oil, fresh eggs, or blueberry cider. Sophia also loves strawberry pickng time. She enjoys picking and eating the berries fresh off the baskets and afterwords we get fresh strawberry shortcake or strawberry milkshakes.
During blueberry time is the blueberry festival, a big community event. Our only experience with this didn't go too well...all I will say is don't let your kids stick their fingers in the pen with the rabbit. It tried to eat Sophia's right pointer...bloody mess...all better now. But I d remember they have blueberry sausages and pancakes and syrup.
I am not found of muskadine grapes so I don't pick those or drink the wine. They also have a short, self-guided winery tour and wine tasting. During the wine festival you can stop your own grapes and buy the wine made from it.
After grape season but before strawberries is Sunflower cuttng. You got to the back of the farm and you cut your own sunflowers out of the large field of 3-4 different varieties. Look out for bees and eggs and squash. Also makes great photo opts with the kids. The bees left us alone but just know they are there.
